Progam Oct. 24 Will Honor Club's 60 Years
Charlotte Dilworth South End Rotary Club will soon be 60 years old and Oct. 24 the program will be a short stroll down memory lane in observance of six decades of service to the community and the world.
The building where we meet, the former Nebel Knitting Mill, may well have played host to meetings that led up to the founding of Dilworth Rotary Club in 1948. Mr. Nebel, owner of the mill, was one of the founding members of the club.
On March 26th, 1948, Woodford A. Kennedy, a long time member of the Charlotte Rotary Club, wrote a letter to John Paul Lucas, Jr., then President of the Charlotte Rotary Club, suggesting the formation of a Rotary Club in the Dilworth section of Charlotte.
J. Aubrey Chrisman and Thomas A. Aldridge, also long time members of the Charlotte Rotary Club, joined in the movement and performed notable work.
The movement received great impetus when Everett C. Bierman, Govenor of the 194th District, Rotary International, advocated creation of Dilworth Rotary before the Club Assembly of the Charlotte Rotary Club and again before the entire club at the time of his official visit. John Paul Lucas, Jr, was appointed as Special Representative and did an outstanding job in steering the proposal through the many necessary steps.
The work of David G. Welton, the new president of the Charlotte Rotary Club, his board of directors, and finally the overwhelming vote of more than one hundred and seventy-five members of the Charlotte Rotary Club, were deciding factor s and assured the formation of a new club.
The organizational meeting was held on the night of October 4th, 1948 with District Governor Everett C. Bierman presiding. A large delegation of Rotarians from the Charlotte Rotary Club, the sponsoring club, was present.
The Charter Presentation Banquet was held at Chaise Mantel, December 3rd, 1948. Governor Everett C. Bierman presented the charter. President Woodie Kennedy accepted for the Dilworth Rotary Club.
Aubrey Chrisman and Woodford Kennedy both became early presidents of the club. John Paul Lucas and David Welton later became members of Dilworth Rotary and David played piano for our singing when we met in the YWCA on Park Road. Paul was also noted for musical talent; he was an expert whistler.
The club name was changed to Charlotte Dilworth South End in 2003, to reflect the neighborhood and area that it serves.

Two Yearly Club Projects Are Just Ahead
Director Gary Barrett reminds us that two of the club's annual projects loom just around the corner - the Crisis Assistance Ministry Coat Drive and the Salvation Army Bell Ringing for the collection kettles.
Gary asks that members purchase new coats or bring gently used coats for the coat drive.
He suggests you pair up with a fellow Rotarian and sign up for a stint or stints of ringing the bell for the Salvation Army. Sign up sheets will be available no later than the Oct. 31 meeting.
