Rotarians Asked to Welcome Home

Rotary District 7680’s Flight of Honor

The Rotary District 7680 Flight of Honor Steering Committee is asking
Charlotte area Rotarians to be at Concourse D exit on the ticketing level of
Charlotte Douglas International Airport April 18 between 8 and 8:30 p.m. to
welcome home the World War II veterans. Please wear your Rotary shirts and
hats if you have them.

The charter flight for the 120 veterans is expected to arrive between 8 and
8:30 p.m. In addition to the veterans, persons on the flight will include
District Governor Bob Wilson, 40 guardians who each have accompanied three
veterans during the day, sponsors, film makers, and members of the media.

The 40 guardians were needed because many of the veterans use wheelchairs,
walkers and canes. Experience in previous flights sponsored by HonorAir
shows the need for one guardian for every three veterans.

Because this flight could only accommodate 120 veterans, there already is a
waiting list of more than 20 veterans who could not go on this flight. The
steering committee hopes it will be able to organize at least one more
flight.

Past District Governor Mitzi Ellis and Mary Ellis are co-chairs of the
Steering Committee. Treasurers are Kelly Morris and Steve Driscoll. Other
chairs are Sandy Osborne, administrative; Richard Theokas, guardians; and
Steve Brandt, public relations.

Other committee members include: John Barringer, Tom Burgess, Jim Calder,
Donny Clement, Lamar Gunter, Chuck Kibler, Dave McKnight, Charlie Peninger,
Lisa Qualls, and Jack Setzer.

Sponsors include: Rotary Clubs of Rotary District 7680, Theragenics, former
Senators Bob and Elizabeth Dole, US Airways, USO of North Carolina’s
Charlotte Center, Charlotte Douglas International Airport, O’Charley’s
Restaurant on South Tryon Street, Associated Posters Inc., Adam Owen,
Creative Director of Fairway Outdoor Advertising, Harris Teeter, Hampton Inn
in Mooresville, and American Legion Post 262 in Charlotte.
