President’s Corner

By Ranjit Rawlley

Last week was my proudest as a Rotarian. In the midst of an economic
recession unlike any that we have seen since the great depression. With a
Tsunami of bad news.. Bankruptcies and the potential loss of such Iconic
companies as Chrysler, GM and Wachovia. With bad news from every corner and
unemployment rates in the double digits. Housing prices down 50 % in some
parts of the country. The Charlotte Dilworth South End Rotary club created a
Tsunami of a different kind. A Tsunami of good news. A Tsunami that will
help provide clean water to those who lack it; housing for those without it;
free some from the scourge of polio; and provide skills to some other to
help feed their families. Rest assured the money raised will be put to good
use. To those 14 new Paul Harris Fellows and four new benefactors and your
Rotary sponsors, I thank you and salute you.

I also salute the Club and those that have paved the way and created the
"Rotary Spirit" that pervades the club. This same spirit has created almost
$325,000 in donations over our history for the Rotary Foundation. Jim Stump
,Chair of the Foundation Committee, told me that he did not recollect a time
when we had created more Paul Harris Fellows and benefactors at one sitting.

I would be remiss if I did not thank Jim Stump Chair and his Rotary
foundation committee: Vice Chair Chuck Lapp, Joe Morris, Ernie Rider, Frank
Kiker, Dennis McGarry, David Hodgkins and Tony Thompson. Your fellow
Rotarians salute you.

Club Honors Paul Harris Fellows, Benefactors on Rotary Foundation Day

Our club honored Paul Harris Fellows and Rotary Foundation Benefactors
during the April 24 program on the Foundation.

*	Joe Dyer honored his wife Patty by making her a new Paul Harris
Fellow (PHF); Patty had a touch of pneumonia and will be recognized at a
later date.
*	Club Vice President Fenton Erwin completed his first PHF.
*	Dr. Chuck Lapp honored his wife Darie by making her a new PHF.
*	Kay May was honored for completing 2 new PHF's; Kay initially
completed her second PHF and then won the drawing from her Dilworth Paul
Harris Club #2 participation (which became her third completed PHF). Kay
received a new Paul Harris pin with 2 sapphires (reflects the initial PHF
completed plus the 2 new ones); Kay becomes a Multiple Paul Harris Fellow.
*	Frank Kiker completed a fourth PHF and received the Paul Harris pin
containing 3 sapphires (reflects the initial PHF completed plus 3 more
PHF's); Frank is a Multiple Paul Harris Fellow.
*	Past President Tom Philson completed a second PHF and chose to honor
his wife Vivian by making her a Paul Harris Fellow; Tom recently won the
drawing from our Paul Harris Club #1; Tom also received a new Paul Harris
pin becoming a Multiple Paul Harris Fellow for the first time.
*	President Ranjit Rawlley honored his wife, Romy Cawood, by creating
a new Paul Harris Fellow in her honor.
*	Kate Richards completed her first PHF.
*	Joe Smith completed a new PHF to honor his daughter, Dr. Angelia
Narron Smith; Joe was away on a church mission trip last Friday and we'll
make the presentation to Dr. Smith at a later date.
*	Jim & Patsy Stump honored their newest granddaughter, Chandler
Elizabeth Glenn, by making her a new PHF.
*	Lee Wensil created a new PHF to honor his wife, Jane; earlier, Lee
won the drawing from Paul Harris Club #3 and honored Jane with this PHF; Lee
also became a Multiple Paul Harris Fellow.
*	President-Elect Dale Harrold completed his first PHF. He knew he
would be unable to attend, so Dale was recognized April 17.
*	Ed & Tricia King honored their daughter "Kayce" with a surprise PHF
presented to her April 17.

Four members were recognized for becoming Rotary International Foundation
Benefactors. One becomes a Benefactor by promising a minimum of $1,000.00
from his/her estate. Becoming a Foundation Benefactor is quite significant
and the recognition is every bit as important as becoming a Paul Harris
Fellow.  The four are:

*	President Ranjit Rawlley
*	President-Elect Dale Harrold
*	David Kirkpatrick
*	Kay May

David and Dale had to be away last Friday and will be recognized at a later
date.

Past District Governor Joe Morris becomes the District's Rotary Foundation
Chair beginning with the 2009-2010 Rotary year.
