New Member Whitney Simpson
Whitney Simpson Becomes a Dilworthian
Whitney Simpson, Tax Manager with Cherry Bekaert & Holland, LLP, became a
member of Charlotte Dilworth South End Rotary Club at the Aug. 14 meeting.
Tony Thompson sponsored her for membership.
Whitneys journey to becoming a Rotarian began when she was about 13. She
started taking private German lessons at that age and that prompted her
interest in the Rotary summer exchange program. The summer between her
junior and senior years of high school, for a month her family hosted a girl
her age from a small village south of Stuttgart, Germany. After that month
ended, she flew home with her for a month in Germany.
She said that experience drove her decision to attend Davidson, not only for
its other great qualities, but because at the time it offered a year-long
study program for college juniors at the University of Wuerzburg. She spent
a calendar year in Germany, the first month with a host family, and the rest
of the year living in a dorm in Wuerzburg.
After Whitney had been out of college for a couple of years, she started
working as a tax accountant for Dellinger & Deese, PLLC, a local public
accounting firm. She did not have an undergraduate accounting degree and
wasn't eligible to sit for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam. In
2001, she took a leave of absence and moved to Columbia, SC, where she
attended the University of South Carolina and earned a Master of Taxation.
Whitney said, I took all the necessary prerequisites simultaneously and
after 15 months and two very hot summers, I came back to Charlotte and
passed the CPA exam. While I was gone, Dellinger & Deese had merged into
BDO Seidman, LLP and I stayed there until April 2007.
She worked in a tax consulting practice at Moore & Van Allen for six months
and then joined Cherry Bekaert & Holland in November 2007. . As a tax
manager, she does mostly business tax compliance and consulting.
She has family Rotary background. Her father was president of the Jonesboro
Rotary club, and her brother is a member of the Sanford Rotary Club. She
was a member of the Top of the Week Rotary Club until recently.
Whitney loves to travel, run, read, and cook. She said, I run with my best
friend a couple of mornings a week, which we have been doing off and on for
almost seven years. I went to Hawaii for 10 days in May, which was a great
trip, and I'm trying to figure out where I want to go next!
