District Flight of Honor Fills Seats
District 7680s September 19th Flight of Honor has booked 120 World War II
veterans and already has a waiting list of 37 veterans for the next flight.
The Flight of Honor Steering Committee heard that report Wednesday night.
Fund-raising for the flight is lagging. Andy Jones of the Charlotte South
Club, one of three committee members responsible for promotion, pointed out
that there are about 3,100 Rotarians in the District and that if 75 percent
of them raised $75 from friends, family and business acquaintances, the
result would be $150,000. That amount would cover the September flight and
the next flight. Applying that same formula to Dilworth, if 49 members each
raised a total of $75 from their circle of family and acquaintances, the
total would be $3,675. That amount would sponsor seven veterans.
So far only 19 members have contributed, but they have averaged more than
$10 each suggested by Lamar Gunter. Five members and a guest contributed a
total of $108 last week.
Probably almost every member has a grandparent, parent, uncle or some other
relative who served in World War II. For example, Lamar had an uncle who
served in the Army in the China-Burma-India Theater, an uncle who served on
an aircraft carrier in the Pacific and a first cousin who participated in
the Iwo Jima invasion. What better way to honor those relatives than to
contribute to and raise money for the Flight of Honor.
Members and their circle of family and acquaintances can make tax deductible
contributions to the Flight of Honor by making out their checks to Dilworth
Charities and marking the memo line Flight of Honor. Members can give their
checks to Lamar, to Dewey Jenkins or mail it to Dilworth Charities, P. O.
Box 19429, Charlotte, NC 28219.
