David College Fund-Raising Project Mushrooms into Kilifi Humanitarian Effort

By John Barringer

For the past four years Charlotte Dilworth South End Rotary has been involved in a multi-faceted program to serve the people of Kilifi, Kenya.

This project, which had its genesis with a request from students at Davidson College to "do a literacy project in Kenya' began with these students attempting to raise $2,500. Little did we realize that before we were through that "2,500.00" would GROW-through the participation of other clubs, District Matching Grants and Rotary Foundation Matching Grants to $181,075.00!

Ultimately this evolved into a Thee Phase Project involving at least 36 Rotary Clubs in Five Districts and utilizing contributions from individuals in 25 states! The lead U.S. Clubs were the Rotary Clubs of Vinings, Georgia, Prince George, Virginia and Charlotte Dilworth South End in Charlotte, NC.

Phase One was a project that provided 100 computers to the library and high schools in Killifish, with support services $17,500.

Phase Two was a program to treat parasites for almost 27,000 kids, plus FULL 4 YEAR SECONDARY EDUCATION for 50 of the poorest and brightest, both male and female $143,000.

Phase Three, named the District 7680 Showcase Project, is treating an additional 14,000 kids for parasites and establishing a number of community nutritional centers $20,572.

                                                                                                                                            Total funds $181,075

Not a bad return on that original goal of $2,500.

Donations Manager Tim Murphy Gave an Overview of ReStore

Program Gave Overview of Habitat’s Re-Store

Habitat for Humanity’s Re-Store Donations Manager provided our club with a good overview of what the operation does and pointed out member John Barringer’s contribution to it.

Tim Murphy said the Re-Store profits funded 12 Habitat for Humanity (HFH) houses in 2009 and that after John put his expertise as a former bookstore owner to work, Julia’s Coffee Shop and Bookstore provided the profit to fund one of those houses. He said before John’s input, the coffee shop and bookstore only provided about $600 a year in profit.

Tim explained that the two Re-Stores on Wendover and Wilkinson Boulevard take in donations of appliances, cabinets, furniture, building materials, household items and sell them to the public. He said the donations are new and gently-used, good quality merchandise.

The profits pay for Habitat houses. HFH has build 950 houses in Charlotte. HFH operates in 90 countries and is currently doing disaster response in Haiti.

Tim mentioned the long association of HFH and Rotary and pointed out that the Rotary Clubs in Charlotte will start on another Habitat house in March.

HonorAir Names New State Director

HonorAir has appointed as its new state director Mitzi Ellis, Past District Governor of Rotary District 7690 and former co-chair of District 7680 Flight of Honor.

 ( page of 2 )

Jeff Miller relinquished his duties heading the HonorAir program in North Carolina to run for the Republic nomination to Congress for the seat currently held by Rep. Heath Shuler, Democrat. Miller said he has been in the process of handing over the reins well before he announced his candidacy for a congressional seat two weeks ago.

Mitzi chaired the first flight out of Charlotte. After she and her family moved back to Greensboro, she helped create the Triad Honor Flight..

Jeff founded HonorAir in Henderson County in 2006 and the local chapter flew its first three flights the following year. Since then, it has become a national program known as the HonorFlight Network.

HonorAir gives World War II veterans the opportunity to go to Washington, D.C. on a chartered flight and visit the World War II Memorial, among other significant landmarks.

District 7680’s next Flight of Honor will be this spring. It costs $500 for each veteran who goes on these charter flights. The funds are raised through donations by Rotarians in District 7680, gifts from veterans’ organizations, donations from foundations and the general public. If you have not donated toward this project, please consider making a donation. If you donate through our own Dilworth Charities and mark your check for Flight of Honor, the contribution is deductible under the federal tax code. Send your check to Dewey Jenkins, Dilworth Charities, P. O. Box 19429, Charlotte, NC 28219.
