BSA speaker
Mark Turner Highlighted the Work of the BSA Mecklenburg Council
BSA Council Executive Director Presents
Program on BSA Mecklenburg Council
Mark Turner, Executive Director of the Mecklenburg Council of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), told our club that the council provides the Scouting experience to 12,000 boys and girls. The girls are reached through the Explorer programs.
He said 4,000 adult volunteers are involved in providing the Scouting Experience. He also pointed out that Scouting involves thousands of families.
Mark said Scouting sets high expectations for the boys and girls involved in the various aspects of Scouting. The council’s various troops produced 209 Eagle Scouts in 2009.
He said in 1952 Scouting enrolled its 20 millionth Scout and in 2000 reached its 100 millionth Scout. He said Scouting in Mecklenburg County continues to grow in spite of funding cuts, including a $358,000 cut in the funding provided by United Way.
Mark’s program was presented the day before the council’s annual Scouting for Food project which last year brought in 130,000 pounds of food for the needy of Mecklenburg County.
