from President Dale</span> <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>Dear Fellow Dilworthians,<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>To paraphrase our new Rotary International president, John
Kenny, it is a great honor to have been chosen as your president. Our club
has established a long tradition of community and world service over the past
60-plus years and I am humbled to have been entrusted with its leadership at
this critical time.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>While you will hear more about these over the coming year
and will hopefully become involved in their implementation, our priorities
for the coming Rotary Year will include:<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p>
<ol style='margin-top:0in' start=1 type=1>
<li class=MsoNormal style='mso-list:l2 level1 lfo1'>An emphasis on
membership that will include our continued recruiting of high-quality
members, more clearly-defined expectations for new members and an
organized retention program that ensures that every member knows that he
or she is valued by the club.<o:p></o:p></li>
<li class=MsoNormal style='mso-list:l2 level1 lfo1'>An emphasis on
fund-raising to allow us to fund more service projects and reduce our
reliance on fund-raising from the club membership. Despite a number of
excellent projects we have done, it has been several years since our
club had a major infusion of cash from fund-raising. The bank balance
available to support good deeds is not where any of us would like to see
it. I ask that you join me in believing that we CAN raise money in
2009-2010 and ask for your help when the Fund-Raising Committee calls
for volunteers.<o:p></o:p></li>
<li class=MsoNormal style='mso-list:l2 level1 lfo1'>Assimilating a revised
committee structure that should allow for clearer lines of
responsibility. As you have probably heard, we have adopted the new
Rotary International slate of five committees (Club Administration,
Rotary Foundation, Public Relations, Membership, Service). In addition,
we have separated Fund-Raising as a stand-alone committee due to its
importance. Each committee has several sub-committees that would have
previously been separate committees. Also, we plan to consider the standard
RI constitution and bylaws this year, as our existing constitution and
bylaws have been misplaced over the years. We have a highly capable and
motivated group of committee and sub-committee chairs. I ask that you
give them your full support during the coming year.<o:p></o:p></li>
<li class=MsoNormal style='mso-list:l2 level1 lfo1'>Continue our excellent
support of the Rotary Foundation. We are also planning to fund our
requested share of the Polio Plus matching funds for the $350 million
pledge to Polio Plus by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.<o:p></o:p></li>
<li class=MsoNormal style='mso-list:l2 level1 lfo1'>Review our service
projects to ensure that they are all relevant and still supported by the
membership. As part of the review, we will be open to adding new
projects.<o:p></o:p></li>
</ol>
<p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>In closing, I would like to quote John Kenny, “In
Scotland, we have a saying that I’m fond of quoting: “We must
look beyond our own parish pump.” It means that we must look beyond
our own home and our own community. We must be aware that ours is only one
community, of one country, of the many countries and communities in the
world.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>In every one of those communities, there is work to be
done. As Rotarians, we will not stand idly by. As Rotarians, we will accept
our responsibility. We can, and we must. For we know that Rotary is only as
great as its club—and our clubs are only as great as the members within
them.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><i>The Future of Rotary Is In Your Hands.” </i>The
future of Charlotte Dilworth Sound End Rotary Club is in <u>OUR </u>hands. I
ask that you join me in accepting this challenge and pledge to you my best
efforts to see that our club is stronger when I leave office next June than

<p class=MsoNormal>One of the last things we did before we left Arequipa
early Saturday morning was to conduct a fact-finding (and instant relief)
visit to a family whose situation only recently came to our attention. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>Even in the midst of all the hardship stories we encounter
daily in Alto Cayma, this one stands out. Samuel and Elsa are a couple in
their early 30s, with 4 children. The family is very stable. Elsa is barely
literate, and takes low-paying manual labor jobs wherever she can find them.
Samuel was a journeyman construction worker before the accident. A year ago
there was a propane gas explosion in their house which set everything on
fire, burning up all their possessions and even the money they had been
saving to build themselves a proper house. There were 4 people in the house
when the explosion occurred, and all escaped alive, but Samuel and his
brother-in-law were badly burned. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>Samuel’s burns were on his face, arms and hands, and
his hands have been immobilized by the burns such that he can no longer work
in his present condition. The family has been living in a one-room house
loaned to them by a relative, and trying to get by on what little Elsa has
been able to make, supplemented by small donations from family and friends as
they are able. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>Samuel has had one operation on his hands, and needs many
more if he is to recover their use. Meanwhile, the family is so strapped
economically that they couldn’t even buy school supplies for their
children to start the new school year. We took them a bunch of groceries,
including a 9-lb. turkey donated by some friends of ours here in Arequipa,
and committed to covering the cost of the kids’ school supplies. Where
we go from here is a wide-open question, but obviously something has to be
done – an Acercándonos sponsorship for one of the kids? A more
comprehensive sponsorship of the entire family? Support for additional
operations for Samuel? Any ideas, dear readers?<o:p></o:p></p>
